From visible captions to usable subtitles
CaptionPeel extracts text that is already burned into video. It does not transcribe audio, translate subtitles, burn captions into video, or replace a full subtitle-authoring timeline.
Select the captions
Open or drop in a video, then draw a movable, resizable rectangle around the subtitles already visible in the frame.
Read them locally
Apple Vision reads only the caption area on your Mac. Change-aware sampling avoids unnecessary OCR while keeping cue boundaries aligned to video frames.
Review every cue
Edit text and timings, seek to a cue, merge or delete entries, and re-read an individual cue when a word needs another look.
Export a standard SRT
Save a clean, multiline UTF-8 .srt file for your editing, archival, or publishing workflow.
Scan only what you need
Choose a partial video range, watch extraction progress, and cancel a background scan whenever you want.
No cloud required
No account, upload, analytics, model download, or external runtime. Your video and captions stay on your Mac.
Private by design
CaptionPeel reads only videos you choose and writes only the SRT destination you choose. Recognition uses Apple’s on-device frameworks, and normal operation requires no network connection.
Open source, with a Mac App Store edition on the way
The complete CaptionPeel source is published on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3.0. You can inspect it, modify it, and build your own copy at no cost. When available, the paid Mac App Store edition will be the way to download CaptionPeel, with convenient installation and automatic updates.
