Common questions

What do I need to run Nightshift?

macOS 12.3 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. Nightshift uses Safari’s modern extension system and needs website access to change webpage colors.

How do I enable the Safari extension?

Open Nightshift, choose “Open Safari Extension Settings,” enable Nightshift, and grant website access when Safari asks. If its button is not visible, customize Safari’s toolbar and drag Nightshift into it.

Why do I see a generic blue icon?

Safari may still have an older development build registered. Quit Safari, run the newest Nightshift app once, reopen Safari, and check the toolbar again. If needed, remove the old toolbar item and add Nightshift back from View → Customize Toolbar.

What does Always Light do?

It turns Nightshift’s filter off. It does not force a website that already chose its own dark theme to become light; use that site’s own appearance control for that.

One website does not look right in dark mode.

Open Nightshift from Safari’s toolbar and turn off “Enable on this website.” Complex graphics, embedded content, or a site’s own dark theme can occasionally interact poorly with a whole-page visual filter.

Why does Safari ask for access to every website?

A Safari extension cannot restyle a webpage without permission to modify it. Nightshift uses that access only to apply its visual filter and read the current domain for your per-site exception list; it does not transmit browsing data.
